Welcome from the President

Dear Gators,

Welcome and thank you for making the University of Houston-Downtown (UHD) your university of choice.

As a UHD student, you are now part of a rich academic heritage, one that continues to impact our community and region.

UHD is nearing 50 years of service to the Gulf Coast area. In that time, the University has provided higher education opportunities for Houstonians from all walks of life, and we will continue to do so. From first-year students to professionals seeking advanced credentials, the University’s student body mirrors our city, creating one of the most diverse higher-education institutions in our nation.

Not only does our student body mirror our city, but our degree programs are increasingly aligned with complex urban issues. We are not only the University of Houston-Downtown, we are also Houston’s Downtown University-strategically positioned for partnerships with community agencies and local businesses. Whether you are pursuing a degree through our Marilyn Davies College of Business, the College of Sciences and Technology, the College of Public Service, or the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, you will have the opportunity to engage with our partners and use your strengths to ameliorate conditions in our communities. When you graduate from UHD, you will not only have a degree that has prepared you for the competitive workforce, but you will also have a degree that has prepared you to lead as an agent of positive change.

Our talented faculty and staff, as well as our special programs and resources, are here to ensure you have the support needed to complete your degree. The work will be challenging, but our commitment to your success began the moment you were admitted. Your faculty and Academic Success Coordinators will guide you through a comprehensive and seamless path to graduation. To nurture our students’ talents and interests, UHD’s Division of Student Success and Student Life offers academic support, health services, career coaching, intramural and club sports, and enhanced curriculum opportunities through various programs and centers. These include the Writing and Reading Center, Science Learning Center, Wellness and Success Center, Scholars Academy, and Career Center to name a few-all designed with various students’ needs in mind.

Please know you are never alone at UHD. Our faculty and staff are here for you, and I stand proudly as one of your champions as well.
