SOCW 6310 - Suicide in the Global Context

More than one million people die by suicide each year, with most suicides occurring in the low and middle-income countries. The purpose of this course is to explore and understand the phenomenon of suicide in a global context. The course is rooted in social justice and examines the why, what and how of suicide in diverse contexts. The topics covered in this course include understanding the differences and similarities in suicide across the low and middle-income countries versus the richer countries, risk and protective factors for suicide, suicide among vulnerable populations and universal and targeted strategies to prevent suicide. This course provides a foundation of knowledge and skills for understanding and preventing suicide through an interactive pedagogy including discussions, reflection exercises, skill development role plays and workshops. Understanding and preventing suicide in the local context will be an important part of this course.
