Mission Statement

The Bachelor of Applied Arts and Sciences with a major in Applied Administration (BAAS-AA) degree program is designed to offer students that have completed the Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree the opportunity to develop competencies, skills, and the foundation preparation for promotion to administrative and supervisory positions in organizations.

Through the completion of the BAAS in Applied Administration, the student is provided the opportunity to acquire knowledge in the areas of program planning and evaluation, supervision and leadership, human resources, budgeting, interpersonal communication skills, change management, information systems, and the development of technology for use in organizational processes. This degree will provide the skills and knowledge for upward mobility into supervisory and administrative positions.

Applied Public Administration & Leadership Concentration

This concentration is targeted toward seasoned professionals with extensive career experience who have not completed their undergraduate degrees. It will be an asset to those seeking to elevate their careers to administrative positions and other supervisory roles that require a university degree.

Through a competency-based curriculum, students will have opportunities to accelerate their education and quickly complete college credits. Competency-based coursework will be structured through strategic learning outcomes. Students who demonstrate a mastery of principles and skills outlined in these outcomes can advance through the program in a timely manner and progress in their careers.

Admission and Declaration of Major with APAL Concentration

Students continuing at UHD who meet the following criteria may be admitted into the BAAS-AA-APAL degree program as a declared major:

UHD GPA of 2.25 or higher
Completion of an Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree from an institution accredited by a Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board recognized accrediting agency

Evidence of 3 years’ work experience in Public Administration to include, city, county, or state governmental agency, public school system, university/college or non-profit organization is recommended but not required.

Students transferring to UHD who meet the following criteria may be admitted into the BAAS-AA-APAL degree program as a declared major:

Transfer GPA of 2.25 or higher
Completion of an Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree from an institution accredited by a Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board recognized accrediting agency

Students who do not meet the criteria above do not qualify for admission into the BAAS-AA-APAL degree program and may be classified as Pre-Applied Administration or Applied Administration majors. However, students not on track to complete and transfer an AAS degree to UHD are strongly encouraged to meet with an advisor to select another degree program.

Degree Requirements

Texas Core Area (42 SCHs)

All students seeking a BAAS in Applied Administration degree from the University of Houston-Downtown must complete the Texas Common Core Requirements as listed in this catalog.

Preparatory Area: AAS/AAT Degree WECM Courses (36 SCHs)

Transfer up to 36 SCHs of approved WECM Coursework.

Major Area (24 SCHs)

Concentration Area (12 SCHs)

Elective Area (6 SCHs)
