BIOL 5430 - Advanced Coastal StudiesCredits: 4 Class: 3 Lab: 1 Crosslisted as GEOL 5430 . Prerequisite(s): Students entering this course must have completed a baccalaureate degree in a natural science discipline which includes credit for CHEM 1308/1108, and at least one of BIOL 1302/1102, or GEOL 1405/1406. There will be a research project concentrating on each student’s area of specialization. Students will study content in all three areas as part of the course, however. This is a graduate level course designed to provide students with a fluency in the areas of coastal biology, chemistry, and geology and competency in conducting field-based research. Students will receive instruction in a variety of field and laboratory techniques in environmental biology, biogeochemistry and sedimentary geology, as well as experimental design and statistical analyses. Students will be required to engage in their own independent research projects and to present their findings to the class. This is a combined lecture/lab course which will integrate lecture topics with lab and field experiences.
