Applied Public Administration & Leadership Concentration


This concentration is targeted toward seasoned professionals with extensive career experience who have not completed their undergraduate degrees. It will be an asset to those seeking to elevate their careers to administrative positions and other supervisory roles that require a university degree.

Through a competency-based curriculum, students will have opportunities to accelerate their education and quickly complete college credits. Competency-based coursework will be structured through strategic learning outcomes. Students who demonstrate a mastery of principles and skills outlined in these outcomes can advance through the program in a timely manner and progress in their careers.
 

Admission and Declaration of Major with APAL Concentration

Students continuing at UHD who meet the following criteria may be admitted into the BAAS-AA-APAL degree program as a declared major:

  • UHD GPA of 2.25 or higher
  • Completion of an Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree from an institution accredited by a Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board recognized accrediting agency

Evidence of 3 years’ work experience in Public Administration to include, city, county, or state governmental agency, public school system, university/college or non-profit organization is recommended but not required.


Students transferring to UHD who meet the following criteria may be admitted into the BAAS-AA-APAL degree program as a declared major:

  • Transfer GPA of 2.25 or higher
  • Completion of an Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree from an institution accredited by a Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board recognized accrediting agency

Evidence of 3 years’ work experience in Public Administration to include, city, county, or state governmental agency, public school system, university/college or non-profit organization is recommended but not required.


Students who do not meet the criteria above do not qualify for admission into the BAAS-AA-APAL degree program and may be classified as Pre-Applied Administration or Applied Administration majors. However, students not on track to complete and transfer an AAS degree to UHD are strongly encouraged to meet with an advisor to select another degree program.

  • APAL 3301 - Cultural Competence
  • APAL 3302 - Internal and External Communication for Leaders
  • APAL 4305 - Administrative Law and Bureaucracy
  • APAL 4307 - Data Analysis, Assessment & Evaluation for Public Administration

Police & Fire Track


 

 

APAL Concentration Electives (6 hours)


Choose two of the following:

  • APAL 3303 - Negotiation and Union Relations
  • APAL 4301 - Building & Maintaining Effective Community Relationships
  • APAL 4302 - Economics for the Public Sector
  • APAL 4303 - Resource Allocation and Logistics
  • APAL 4304 - Crisis Management and Communication for Leaders
  • APAL 4305 - Administrative Law and Bureaucracy (Elective for students in the Police & Fire Track)
  • APAL 4306 - Grant Development and Administration
  • APAL 4308 - Strategic Planning for the Public Sector   (Elective for students in the General Track)
  • AA 4399 - Directed Study in Applied Administration
